Scarf of Healing

Title: The Scarf of Healing

Medium: Knitting

Materials: made with secondhand yarn, likely wool blends. In the end I used four types of yarn and approximately 9 skeins in total.

About:

My first knitting project of all time! I watched this video by Nimble Needles to learn how. To be honest I’m using the term “watched” pretty loosely because as you can probably tell I took a lot of creative freedoms on this project.

The scarf is comically large because in the video he uses a chunky yarn, and all the yarn available to me was what I would consider slim/petite. In the video he casts on sixteen stitches, and for some reason I decided to cast on sixty.

Another reason it’s so huge is that by the end of the project it had also become a metaphor. I wrote a whole blog post about it but essentially I taught myself how to knit so I had something to keep me busy in the hospital. It also helped me process through the grief of losing my grandparents; the yarn and needles came from my grandma.

I really embraced a philosophy that I tell my students: you only do something for the first time once. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, because it’s the only way to see how much you’ve learned. I read somewhere that a scarf was a horrible choice for a first project because the beginning half ends up noticeably worse. I disagree on that very premise. Getting to see how much I progressed even in a single project makes me emotional!
