The art I made for this class felt like much more of an extension of my personal art than what I’d made in other classes.

This piece, Cockroach King, was inspired by a Haken song by the same name. Hell yeah.

We spanned a wide variety of topics, from materials like wire and cardboard as well as movements like interactive art, something I'd always wanted to experiment with but never had a space big enough to play with.
Sustainability was a core focus of the class as well. I used recycled materials for probably 80% of the class, as well as my interactive piece having a sustainability focus.

Leaves Keep Falling Sketch

The piece, titled The Leaves Keep Falling was a meditation on deforestation and the roles we each play in protecting Mother Earth. Each leaf was hand-made, with a number out of 400 written on the back to help symbolize how few acres of forested land existed at that time. I'm sure it's even less now. Leaves Leaf-making in action

Guests (my classmates) were encouraged to take a leaf with them after spending time with the piece

Outside of the basic constraints of whatever the particular unit was, we were given tons of free rein. Class time was almost like art lab, where we all experimented and learned from each others mistakes and happy accidents. The back of the class had a bunch of abandoned supplies from an Art for Elementary Schoolers class the college had discontinued we raided all the time. Great art school camaraderie vibes. By the end of class, it was easy to tell whose project was whose just because their individual style was able to shine through so much. Plarn Dress Collage

Plarn Dress Sketch

A lesson I have returned to again and again in art school is fitting into constraints. It's hard to do as an artist. There were many projects for this class I had to submit less than finished.

REACH Sign

Previously that would have felt impossible for me. I would have rather turned things in weeks late than show something off while still in-progress. Maybe being a teacher myself helped break out of this habit as well. . .

(You can see even more of my sketches agonizing over this project I never finished over in my College Sketchbook)
